Interlochen Review Call for Submissions

Eligibility: High school students and recent graduates (<1 year).

Guidelines:

Submit up to 6 pieces total. All submissions must be accompanied by a brief author bio. Please DO NOT INCLUDE YOUR NAME anywhere on the submission EXCEPT for in the bio statement. We do accept work recognized by Scholastic Art & Writing Awards and YoungARTS. We DO NOT accept previously published work from other journals, online or in print.

PoetryWe accept both free verse and formal poetry. Long form poetry is welcome. Prose poetry and video poems should be submitted under the Hybrid Genres category. 

Fiction: Our fiction category encompasses several genres, including realistic fiction, historical fiction, science fiction, fantasy, and magical realism, among others. Flash fiction should be submitted in the hybrid category. Pieces are limited to 5,000 words.

NonfictionOur nonfiction category mainly consists of personal essay and memoir. Pieces should and must be truthful in their entirety to be considered nonfiction. We DO NOT ACCEPT journalism pieces or academic essays as part of our nonfiction category. Film essays and photo essays should be submitted in the hybrid category. Pieces are limited to 5,000 words. If the author’s name appears anywhere in the piece, it should be replaced with “[author name]” in order to preserve our anonymous submissions process.

Scripts/Screenplays: Scripts and screenplays can be a variety of lengths, including standalone scenes, short films, and one act plays. Pieces are limited to 40 pages and must be in standard script or screenplay format.

Hybrid Genres: The hybrid genre category includes work of varying mediums. Pieces submitted to this category should take an unconventional approach to writing, whether by combining multiple pre-existing genres or creating a new one all together. Hybrid also includes, but is not limited to, film essay/poem, photo essay, new media writing, performance documentation, or some other hybrid of media, materials, structures, conventions, and forms. NOTE: We accept singer-songwriter compositions in this category as well, submitted in either audio (.mp3) or video (.mp4 or.mov) format. 

Visual Art: We accept a variety of work to our visual arts category, including paintings, drawings, photographs, sculptures, and more. You are limited to ten submissions total.

Visual Art Portfolios: We also accept portfolios of visual art. Your submission to this category is limited to one portfolio with a maximum of twenty pieces. Pieces within a portfolio should be connected aesthetically or thematically, and must be accompanied by an artist’s statement describing the portfolio’s intentions.
